After 21 years in the military and a few years in civilian life Al was introduced to aviation. In 2006 Al received his Private Pilots Certificate. In 2006 Al joined the Albert E. Forsythe chapter and the Black Pilots of America. In 2007 Al attended Skyhook and volunteered as a judge. Excited by the event, Al volunteered the next year and eventually took over the duties of Competition Coordinator.

In 2012 Al alone with others formed the Connie Nappier Chapter of BPA and became their first president. This office he has held until 2018. In 2019 he became the chapter treasurer.

On the national level Al has served as Vice- President, Operations Officer and currently serving as Chairman of the Board.
