Inspiring the Next Generation of Aviators

Every summer, the Black Pilots of America (BPA) hosts the Les Morris Summer Flight Academy — a transformative aviation experience designed for high school students with a passion for flight. This 14-day immersive program introduces students to the fundamentals of flying, led by a team of seasoned volunteer flight instructors with over 165 years of combined experience. The Summer Flight Academy is held annually at Houston Southwest Airport (KAXH) in Houston, Texas.

The Important Details

The BPA Summer Flight Academy takes place each summer at Houston Southwest Airport (KAXH) in Houston, Texas. This 14-day residential program is designed for high school students between the ages of 16 and 19 who have at least a B average and a strong interest in aviation.

Over the course of the program, students will also receive:

  • 10 hours of certified flight instruction
  • 40 hours of FAA-approved ground school

Students will also live, learn, and fly in a highly structured environment led by certified instructors with decades of combined experience. For those who excel, there’s an opportunity to complete a solo flight — a major milestone for any aspiring pilot, completed with instructor approval and supervision.

What Students Can Expect

This program is immersive and intensive — perfect for students who are ready to be challenged academically, physically, and mentally. Daily schedules include flight briefings, hands-on training, classroom sessions, and structured downtime.

Students will:

  • Learn how to preflight, taxi, take off, and land an aircraft

  • Study FAA regulations, radio communication, airspace navigation, meteorology, and flight planning

  • Train toward the FAA Private Pilot Written Exam

  • Log official flight time that counts toward future flight certifications

  • Work closely with peers and mentors in a disciplined, respectful environment

This is more than flight school — it’s a leadership and character-building experience designed to help young people grow into confident, capable aviators.

Kirsten’s Journey to Private Pilot

In 2019, Kirsten, a high school student from the North Carolina Legacy Chapter, attended the Les Morris BPA Summer Flight Academy with one goal in mind — to fly.

With the support of her instructors and a clear sense of purpose, she returned home after the academy more motivated than ever. And before the start of her senior year of high school, Kirsten achieved her Private Pilot License — an incredible milestone for a young aviator.

Kirsten’s Journey to Private Pilot

In the summer of 2023, Cason Brinkley, a student from Cleveland Central High School, made an impressive leap toward a future in aviation. At just 15 years old, Cason was the youngest of 16 students nationwide to complete the prestigious Black Pilots of America Summer Flight Academy in Houston, Texas. Over the course of the two-week program, he received 10 hours of certified flight instruction, 40 hours of ground school training, and essential pilot tools — including a flight computer, plotter, pilot logbook, and Jeppesen training materials.

Supported by an $8,000 BPA scholarship, Cason’s experience reflects both his dedication and the Academy’s commitment to developing the next generation of aviators. His accomplishments were recognized at the November board meeting, where he was honored not only for completing the program, but for doing so with excellence and maturity well beyond his years. Congratulations, Cason — your journey is just beginning!

Real Flight Experience

From day one, students are in the cockpit — not just reading about flight, but actually flying. With 10 hours of certified flight time and 40 hours of ground school, students gain valuable aviation knowledge and hands-on experience.

College & Career Advantage

Participation in this program looks impressive on college applications, scholarship forms, and flight school resumes. It signals discipline, maturity, and a strong commitment to STEM and aviation-related fields.

Mentorship That Matters

Students are trained by volunteer instructors with decades of combined experience. These professionals offer not only top-tier instruction, but also guidance, mentorship, and networking opportunities in the aviation industry.

Confidence & Character Building

Students leave the program with more than just knowledge — they leave with confidence, focus, and a sense of achievement. Many discover strengths they never knew they had and leave inspired to pursue their dreams.
